Students report on their first "Family Day"

Connor- Yesterday after waking up from sleeping 18 hours, I ventured to a social gathering put together by a local church with Eva, the student hosting me. Music, smiles, and food were what greeted me there and made the assimilation into the crowd, despite the language barrier, surprisingly easy. After a few hours of hanging out with the locals, Eva and I went back to her house to find her parents already waiting in the car for us to journey up the mountainside to get a view of the valley, and get up close to the Black Forest. The cool breeze, gurgling streams, and lush scenery were intense, and the freedom from modern noises was something seldom experienced in Potomac. Overall my first day in Germany made a very positive impression, and I cannot wait to spend the rest of my time here.

Arman – Yesterday I had a wonderful breakfast and conversation with my host family on everyday German life and culture. After taking a refreshing shower and putting on some comfortable clothes we rode on bicycles to the Freiburg community swimming pool which was about fifteen minutes away from where I’m staying. Then we lay back in the warm sun and relaxed which was also soothing.  When I got home and changed we went out to get some Italian ice cream at a local store. Soon when it turned dark I watched a film briefly with the family before I went to sleep.

Abby—Yesterday I went to a brunch and watched my Jule’s band, Holiday Inn, play music. Afterwards, Jule, her brother, Felix, her band, a neighbor and I went to a lake, where we explored and had fun. When I went home, the Kohlers, my host family, had dinner and talked on the patio. Mr. Kohler then took Jule, Felix and me to the neighboring village where we had ice cream, walked along the Rhine River and went to an old church on a mountain where we saw the nearby mountain ranges and landmarks.

Perri—Yesterday we had a big family brunch and made great conversations with the whole family.  I learned new German words!   After that I watch Tatijana’s sister, Elie’s, dance video. Then Tatijana and I met Eliana, Deborah, and Katherine to watch Deborah’s soccer game. On the way there we saw many vineyards and landscapes as well as the mountains of France. After the game we all went for ice cream and then went back to Deborah’s house to go swimming. After that we all ate and hung out. Then later Tatijana and I left and went home and we watched movies with her family.

Eliana- Yesterday was a great start to my Germany trip! I had a delicious breakfast filled with tons of nutella and orange juice. We then got ready and Tatijana, Kat Hug (Katherine), Perri and I went to or Bread Woman’s (Deborah)soccer game were we screamed and cheered the whole time and got tons of funny looks from those around us. After a great game where Bread Woman’s team won 3-0 we all walked to get ice cream and laughed and talked the whole way there and back. Once we got back to my host family’s house we all went swimming and played volleyball! We then ate food and talked for a couple hours until Perri and Tatijana left. Kat Hug, Bread Woman, and I then decided it would be fun to sleep outside (not a good idea) there was so many bugs and we thought we saw a snake so we decided to sleep in the pool house, also not a good idea. We talked all night and laughed so hard that we were crying and eventually fell asleep. Yesterday was a great way to begin my journey in Germany and I can’t wait for what’s to come next!
